This one-of-a-kind antique Japanese elephant champlevé standing lamp is a truly awe-inspiring work, with many floral bands of rich turquoise, blue, green, deep red and white enamels combined with etched geometrics. The intricate designs start at the base and continue for almost 5 feet! The base has a lotus shaped champlevé border on its edge and an etched metal geometric design on its face. Next comes the fabulous metal elephant, with its beautiful chrysanthemum champlevé blanket and detailed metal harness. From there the stem of the lamp rises, band after band, shape after shape, one champlevé floral design after another. Sue Johnson has taken one of these designs and repeated it throughout the hand-cut rich red mulberry paper border in the companion mica lampshade – 30” wide and 18” tall itself.
